Ocean health and deep-sea exploration took center stage alongside sailors and revelers who came to Trieste, Italy, for the 57th Barcolana regatta. The world’s largest sailing race took place Oct. 1-12 and drew more than 400,000 visitors. For the third year, a collaboration between Wendy Schmidt, Schmidt Ocean Institute, and 11th Hour Racing brought the wonders of the deep sea to the Piazza Unità d’Italia, the largest sea-facing piazza in Europe. Visitors were treated to a nightly film projection on the historic Trieste City Hall. Piano B produzioni, an Italian event agency based in Milan, created this dramatic production using footage from the remotely operated vehicle SuBastian. The 10-minute film, “An Ocean’s Song,” is about discovery, biodiversity, and health, and it is told from the Ocean’s perspective, voiced by Italian movie star Claudio Santamaria.
